The First 100 Days of new Manchester City FC CEO

As of this week, Ferran Soriano, the newly appointed CEO of Manchester City FC is midway through his first 100 days having started in the role on September 1st of this year. During this crucial 100 day period, Soriano needs to be focusing on the core areas of leadership, strategy and people in order to make an accelerated start in the role and set himself up for long term success in what is traditionally a very unforgiving industry. Soriano has an impressive commercial and football background which positions him well to be successful in his new role, should he get off to the right start. His previous roles include Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FC Barcelona, and Chairman of Spanair, as well as consulting roles with a number of global management organisations. Expectations of the new CEO are high at the club, compounded by the fact that he seems a popular choice among the club’s fans. While at FC Barcelona, Soriano’s success in the role was highlighted by reversed losses of 73m euro to 88m euro profit and an increase in the club’s turnover from 123m euro to 308m euro. In order to emulate this success, he will need to remain focused over the coming weeks – as every good leader knows, your reputation and track record will only get you so far in a new job. Soriano will need to utilise his leadership skills to get the club’s workforce behind him and must invest time in establishing a clear business strategy. Central to this will building relationships with the existing executive team. In particular, Soriano will need to build a strong relationship with Tom Glick who has recently been appointed as Chief Commercial and Operating Officer at the club. Like Soriano, Glick has a strong commercial and football background and was CEO of Derby County before joining City. The pair will form a key partnership for the club as it aims to reach new heights in the commercial world. Similarly to the City players on the football field, who need to excel in opening months of the Premier League, an outstanding performance in the first 100 days in this role is the best way for Soriano to achieve long term success with the club.
